Smallwood Drive Elementary Earns Another New York State School of Character Award
Smallwood Drive Elementary School has been named a 2024 New York State School of Character by character.org. Smallwood is only one of three schools in New York State to be recognized with this honor.
In 2019 Smallwood Drive Elementary School was the only school in WNY to be named both a State and National School of Character by Character.org. The designation is valid for five years, meaning that Smallwood Drive will now hold this designation from 2019-2029. Character.org certifies schools and districts each year at the state level that have developed and implemented an intentional, proactive, and comprehensive approach that embeds character into all aspects of the school life. Smallwood Drive is now eligible to be considered again for the highest honor, a National School of Character.
Smallwood has consistently prioritized the development of character and the importance of social, and emotional health with students. There have been several successful initiatives since 2019, such as "Power of a Puppet," "Mantra Mondays," "Use your voice," "Lending a Paw," and "Our Community, Our Plan," that have played a direct role in teaching students the skills they need to grow into exceptional citizens of the community.
“We are committed to fostering character development in our students,” said Principal J. Richard Crozier. “This achievement is a reflection of the collective effort, dedication, and character that defines our beloved Smallwood.”
“Our journey with character.org has consistently placed the development of character, social, and emotional health at the forefront of what we do,” said Crozier. “I firmly believe that the numerous initiatives resulting from our involvement with the organization have played a direct role in teaching our students the skills they need to grow into exceptional citizens of this community.”
